You always wanna know why I like Randy Newman's music, right?

Here's a quote from Peter Winkler in an essay, "Randy Newman's Americana," that was published in Popular Music in 1987 that sums it up nicely...
“Though his view of American society is bleak and pessimistic, Newman’s music is an affirmation and celebration of the richness and variety of American [...] life.”
Quite simply, I see him as kind of a kindred spirit. :)
