OK, well, there's not a whole lot to talk about, really...last week Saturday my dear friend got married, but you all knew that already. I drove home from Kenosha in a super fun rainstorm (using super fun in the sarcastic sense), and then work this week was ok...not great, not terrible, but I started doing some new tasks and nothing went catastrophically wrong, so that's encouraging.

I've started prepping ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner's drinks. As some of you know, I'm usually in charge of the booze at Thanksgiving dinner with my friend renface, her husband, and some of his and her family...I'm the only non-family member there, but since I've known Ren more than half my life, this is understood to be normal. Plus, I bring good booze, so they can't complain about anything. :) I've already got the Pimento dram (allspice liqueur) mellowing in the back of the fridge, and today I started the maceration process for the pecan-infused bourbon. I soaked a little over two cups of pecans in water for a half hour, drained them, spread them on a small sheet pan, dusted them with 1/4 tsp Penzey's Baking Spice, 1/2 tsp Vanilla sugar, a tiny bit of raw sugar, a tiny bit of fresh ground pepper, and a little kosher salt (thank you, Alton). Toasted them for 20 minutes in the toaster oven, let them cool, put them in a big bottle and poured a 750ml bottle of Knob Creek Bourbon Whiskey on top. I'm going to let that sit for a week, shaking daily, then strain out the solids and let it, too, mellow in the fridge.

I may be making a whole bunch more homemade grenadine either tonight or tomorrow...i've got four pomegranates to de-seed, and then the pips simmer in 4 cups sugar and 4 cups of water for a half hour, get strained, and bottled and chilled.

In other news, we've still got a few tenacious mice lurking in the walls, so the gloves are coming off...I didn't want to move on to poison and glue traps, but that's the only way we're going to be rid of the little buggers, I think. Sorry mice, you should've realized that when you eat the thumb-tip out of my tropical foliage patterned oven mitt, this means war.
