Mom really really really wanted a Christmas tree again this year, and enlisted the bunnies to entreat me to get one (What can I say? Kiwi looks very cute when he's up next to the tree, sniffing at the boughs). We ran out before we get another metric ass-load of snow and picked one up from Home Depot (Balsam, about 6 feet, $24.95+tax.)
We brought it home and I sawed off the bottom, so fresh wood would be exposed to soak up the water. Then I noticed one of the branches at the bottom was broken, but still attached. So I set about sawing that off too. However, in my haste, I did a really dumb thing. I was sawing towards my hand.
Yeah. I'll bet you can see where this is going.
Mercifully, it's not at all deep enough to require stitches, the bleeding stopped pretty quickly with pressure, and it's not bleeding through the Band-Aids I've now got spiraling up my left index finger.
Also inclining me to think rather uncharitably towards the tree is the fact that the eye-bolts on the tree stand would not quite reach to the trunk, and so we had to insert little pieces of balsa wood between the trunk and three out of the four bolts to keep it from toppling over. Trimming will occur at a later date, most likely during the snow we're supposed to be getting Thursday night into Friday. Or during the snow we're supposed to get after that Saturday night into Sunday. Have I mentioned that I'm really frakking sick of snow?
On the plus side, I decided to indulge a tiny bit, as my student loan is now paid off, as well as my iMac, so I bought a bottle of Old Overholt Rye Whiskey. This is my first time trying rye, and I quite like it. I'm looking for cocktails to use it in, so if any of you have suggestions, let me know.
